A fixed bridge is one way to replace a missing tooth with something that is not removable. A fixed bridge usually requires preparing one or more teeth on either side of the missing tooth space. A fixed bridge consist of abutment teeth and pontic teeth. The abutment teeth are the teeth that hold the bridge and they are prepared in much the same way a tooth receiving a crown is prepared. The pontic teeth are the artificial teeth that are attached to the abutments. The pontic tooth or teeth look natural and emerge from the gum tissue, giving the appearance of a real tooth. Bridge fabrication often requires multiple appointments to ensure exact fit and perfected esthetics.
